The Austrian-Hungarian Europe School in Budapest

Our teachers take great pleasure from student-centred teaching. Communicative learning, the so-called "open learning" and the pedagogy of Montessori and Freinet are all frequently employed in our teaching methods. We aim to provide individual attention for each and every child alongside thorough liaison with the parents.

Since the children belong to different religions and faiths, communication with one another, mutual understanding and tolerance are especially important for us.

We have placed special emphasis on the teaching of German, and, no less importantly, on English and Spanish. The children are taught and assessed according to a modified version of the Austrian national curriculum. The language of the classroom is German. Our experience has shown us that even beginner and false beginner language learners can learn the German language relatively quickly through targeted teaching. Austrian teachers or those trained in Austria assist them in their learning. Further significant input comes in the form of project tasks and project weeks, communicative teaching, reading the works of Austrian writers and poets, occasional literature events in school, media projects (newspaper, radio, TV), ski trips and continuous interaction with German native speakers.

Even though we are not specifically a science-orientated school, nevertheless we arrange regular experiments and innovative projects according to the requirements of modern science education, and according to the practice of Finnish schools, the ‘world leaders' according to the OECD's PISA study.

However, Hungarian language and culture do not suffer, by any means. Hungarian educators support and assist our qualified team. The subjects taught in Hungarian are all devised according to the Hungarian national curriculum.

After successful completion of our lower senior school, it is possible for pupils to continue their studies in Hungarian and Austrian secondary schools. This is also valid for other EU states. Later on, once they have successfully passed the school-leaving exam at higher secondary school, pupils will be able to apply to study at Austrian, Hungarian and other European universities.

Lunch is available at the school. Afterwards, various facilities and the large garden provide wonderful opportunities both for studying and for relaxation. There is a wide choice of sports and musical activities. We also offer afternoon care facilities (until 5 p.m.).

Our school is made up of about 230 children (aged between 6 and 10) in the primary school and about 200 children (aged between 10 and 14) in the lower senior school. The pupils come from a variety of countries, but most of them are from Hungary.

Our school centre is located in the West of Budapest, within easy reach of Deli pu. (the Hungarian term for Southern Railway Station), via public transport. (Take the second underground line (M2) to Moszkva tér or Déli pu. and then bus number 190 to Orbán tér.)

The school premises are the property of the Catholic Order of the Brothers of Christian Schools (FSC). The kindergarten and Europe School are run by two separate foundations with a third running the higher senior school (secondary school). The Republic of Austria is one of the founders of all three foundations.
